VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
SHELTER/CRISIS HOTLINE **
Established in 1964, Haven House is the first crisis-intervention shelter for battered women and their children in the nation. The shelter accommodates up to thirty-six women and children at a time for stays of up to forty-five days. Paid staff and volunteer women are available for peer advocacy and support, crisis intervention, support group facilitation, and they answer our 24-hour crisis line. On the crisis line, they are available to listen, provide peer support and advocacy, make referrals, share information and accept women into our shelter.
CHILDREN’S PROGRAM **
The Haven House children’s program provides children of all ages a safe, nurturing atmosphere where they are offered individual counseling to raise self esteem, art therapy and educational group services that focus on prevention and intervention of family violence. Additionally, mothers receive support and family counseling promoting positive and effective parenting skills. Children attend local public schools while in residence. Paid staff and volunteers assist with art activities, field trips, play groups, parties and child care.
EDUCATION & PREVENTION PROGRAM **
This program provides completely free domestic violence education, presentations, prevention trainings and other resources to schools, businesses, civic agencies, and faith-based organizations. Topics include Domestic Violence in the Workplace, Teen Dating Violence and Healthy Relationships, and Parenting Skills. Paid staff and volunteers present educational curriculum to K-12 schools, community groups and clubs.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM **
This program is designed to provide follow-up support to residents after they leave Haven House. Life management skills are improved through individual and group counseling services which promote self-sufficiency. Clients learn about crisis management, setting goals, transitional or low cost housing options, available social services, and also receive assistance with legal advocacy in courts. This program also seeks to build community awareness and support by providing domestic violence education and training to volunteers, professionals including police officers, attorneys, health care providers, and educators. Public speakers are available to present information to any group, company, or organization, large or small.
**The above programs require volunteers to complete our 40-Hour Direct Service Training, see below
